O-12 Printing Set Up Within Sierra

O-12 PRINTING SET UP WITHIN SIERRA

Sierra allows you to print a variety of information, including general database information (e.g., records and tables), labels, receipts, claims and notices. Sierra defines five categories (or classes) of printers including defining printers used with print templates. Select the tab below that corresponds with the type of printer you need to set up.

O-12 Printing From Within Sierra

STANDARD PRINTER

1. Go to the FILE menu within Sierra and choose Select Printer > Standard Printer.

2. A menu will appear asking you where to locate your printer. In all cases you'll be choosing a local printer (i.e, a printer used by your Windows operating system), even if your printer is shared on the network:

a. First, select the LOCAL PRINTER option and click on the OK button.

b. Next, choose the local printer from the list of those available on your Windows operating system.

c. Go to the FORMAT tab. For standard printers, we recommend setting the format to Graphic and the font size to either 8 or 10. Click OK to retain your settings.

d. NOTE: If you have questions about this setting, contact the Library Systems Administrator for more information.

RECEIPT PRINTER

1. Go to the FILE menu and choose Select Printer > Receipt Printer.

2. A menu will appear asking you where to locate your printer. In all cases you'll be choosing a local printer (i.e, a printer used by your Windows operating system).

a. First, select the LOCAL PRINTER option and click on the OK button.

b. Next, choose the local printer from the list of those available on your Windows operating system.

c. Go to the PAGE SETUP tab. For receipt printers, change the media size to 72mm x Receipt if available.

d. Click the FORMAT tab. Set the format to Text (Narrow), set the lines to eject to a reasonable number between 5 and 9 and make sure the Print form feed box is checked. Click OK to save your changes.

PRINT TEMPLATES

1. Go to the FILE menu and choose Select Printer > Print Templates.

2. A small window will appear asking you what type of template you want to configure. In our example, we are using spine labels but this process works also for transit slips and hold slips.

a. First, select the output type (Spine Label) and click on the OK button.

b. Next, choose the local printer from the list of those available on your Windows operating system under Print Service and click the Save this printer selection checkbox. Click Print to save your changes.

PRINTER SETTING OPTION: LAST USED ON WORKSTATION FOR LOGIN

There is a setting available for all Sierra logins that allows the workstation to remember printer settings used on that workstation. Most libraries have elected to use this option. The system saves your printer settings on the workstation rather than on the Sierra server. Each login on a particular workstation can have its own set of local printer settings. Note, however, that if a login is used on a different workstation, these settings will not be available, but can be set up and saved to that workstation as well.

This option is strongly urged for any work environment where a login uses the same printer repeatedly and you do not want to be prompted (even initially) to select the printer. For example, if a particular circulation login is used solely to print to a receipt printer, Sierra would remember that printer every time the login was used and would not prompt you to select a printer.
